Community Service

GAUHATI LIONS EYE HOSPITAL is the temple of service of Lions Club of Gauhati and has been a landmark project by which our services have been acknowledged in the society since 1997.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM

Service to humanity is the motto for LIONS and making our eye care facilities available across all sections of the society is the ultimate motive of Gauhati Lions Eye Hospital. It was earlier observed that people living in the major towns in our state have access to medical treatment but the same is not applicable to a majority of the people in the rural areas. Moreover, a majority of the rural people diagnosed for treatment cannot afford the cost of treatment because of which they continue to suffer and live in their world of darkness.

Lions Club of Gauhati had established GAUHATI LIONS EYE HOSPITAL to serve the under privileged people who did not have access or could not afford the cost of their eye care treatment. To drive this initiative, we have set up a Community Outreach team and their prime focus is to conduct free eye screening camps in the rural areas in association with the local authorities and organisations and see that the cataract patients detected are operated and vision restored so that they can lead a peaceful life.

COMMUNITY EYE SCREENING CAMPS

With requisite permission from authorities concerned, the free eye screening camps are held at the identified locations with local help wherein apart from cataract detection, blood pressure as well as blood sugar are also checked. Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness scheme, our Hospital has been authorised by the Govt of India to fight blindness and the authorities in the various districts are extending full co-operation and help in our journey.

OUTREACH VEHICLES

Our Hospital is equipped with 3 vehicles of different capacities for ferrying patients from their residences to the Hospital for treatment and back. After the patients to be operated for cataract are identified in an eye screening camp, they are picked up from their residences on a specified date and brought to our hospital for treatment/operation, which is a process of 2 days. Once the operation is completed and patient is discharged, they are then dropped to their homes by our vehicles totally free of cost.

COMMUNITY OPD

A dedicated OPD for community patients has been set up where the patients from the eye screening camps are checked-up and if required are then referred for cataract operation to the hospital surgeon. This OPD has been built exclusively for the under-privileged patients and is totally free of cost for all. It has a sitting capacity for 25 patients at a time and necessary diagnostic equipment have also been installed so that their investigations can be done immediately. We would like to acknowledge the contribution of M/S Bajaj Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Mumbai in setting up this ward in 2020 and this has given us the edge in providing quality service to the needy patients from the community.

COMMUNITY HALLS

In order to provide accommodation to the rural patients coming to the hospital for treatment, we have set up a community hall with a 25 bedded capacity where patients can put up during the course of the treatment. We also provide wholesome meals cooked in our kitchen under hygienic conditions totally free of cost during the period of their stay in these halls. Our dedicated team takes utmost care to see that the patients are comfortable during their stay in the hospital.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

The Govt of India through their DBCS programme fund a major portion of our community service project, but our endeavour to provide point to point service to our needy brethren in the society entails a lot of expenditure on logistics and infrastructure. We are very fortunate that members from the society have always come forward to support us whenever required, because of whom we have been able to serve the needy patients to their satisfaction. We are proud to state that most of the local organisations in the city have been associated with our hospital in some form or the other, be it for conducting eye screening camps or for treatment of poor patients.
